What does YHWH mean?
YHWH (yah-weh) is God’s personal name—the name he uses when he wants to be known, not just talked about. It comes from a Hebrew word meaning “to be,” so it points to God as the one who simply is, who was, and who will always be. But more than just a name, God explains who he is through how he acts: compassionate, gracious, patient, forgiving, and faithful. So YHWH means the God who keeps showing up, who stays true to who he is, and who can be trusted in relationship.
“The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The LORD (YHWH), the LORD (YHWH), a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.’” Exodus 34:5–7
